Prepare Yourself For a Fire In Your Home

Although the idea of a fire occurring in your home in Santa Barbara, CA can be scary, being prepared and having a fire escape plan can be lifesaving in an emergency. There are several steps you can prepare yourself for a fire in your home.

1. Become Familiar with Fire Alarms in Your Home

In the event of a fire, early detection can be incredibly important. However, a fire alarm that is out of batteries or needs to be replaced may not be able to alert you if a fire occurs. Changing the batteries yearly and replacing the fire alarm at least once every ten years can help to ensure you will be alerted if a fire occurs. Additionally, it can be helpful to test the fire alarm so you and your family members will know what the alarm sounds like and can react quickly if the alarm goes off.

2. Make a Plan

Creating a fire escape plan is a key way you can prepare yourself for a fire. If a fire occurs, knowing how to quickly escape can help keep you safe. It’s generally useful to have more than one route of escape in case one route is inaccessible during a fire. If you live with other people, it can also be smart to agree on a meeting spot that is a safe distance from your home.

3. Practice Your Escape Plan Frequently

Once you have an emergency escape plan, practicing it frequently can make the process of actually escaping much easier. Practicing your plan will also give you the opportunity to notice any potential issues with your escape route. By noticing problems during a practiced escape, you can adjust your route if necessary and find alternatives in a low-stress environment.

Knowing how the fire alarms in your home work, making a fire escape plan and practicing your plan often can help to prepare you and your family for a fire. Fire damage restoration experts are often useful to contact after a fire occurs.

4 Facts About Renters Insurance and Home Fires

Renters insurance form and dollars on the table. Renters insurance can help you in case of a fire.

Renters Insurance and Home Fires: 4 Facts

If you’re renting a house or apartment in the city of Santa Barbara, CA,  then you’ll be happy to know that if you have renters insurance your policy will cover you in the case of a home fire. While you might think you will be okay without insurance when renting, if a fire were to happen you would have to pay to replace your belongings and for a place to stay while the fire restoration company repairs your home. If you want more information on how a renters insurance policy can help you in the case of a home fire, read the following four facts!

1. You Are Compensated for the Replacement Value of Belongings

Luckily, most insurances will give you the amount of money it would cost to replace your belongings rather than their current value. For example, rather than getting the value of an old, outdated television, you will get the amount of money necessary to replace the TV with a new one.

2. You are Covered for Any Damages You Are Liable For

If the fire was caused as a result of something you did, your renters insurance will cover the money you would owe to the landlord for fire damage or neighbors who were injured in the fire.

3. Your Stay Somewhere Else Is Paid for

If your place of residence is deemed uninhabitable, your insurance will pay for the time you spend at an apartment or other location while your home is being restored.

4. Arson Is Not Covered

As you would probably assume, insurance will not cover you for a fire you started in your own home on purpose. However, if you start a fire on accident you will be covered.

While it is easy to assume that a fire will never happen in your home, it can happen to anyone. That is why it is so important you have renters insurance to cover any costs that might accrue as a result.

Fire damage cleanup is a difficult, multi-step process that often consists of water damage, smoke damage, and fire damage. Depending on the severity of the fire and the heat of the blaze, it is also possible that the property has structural damage and/or may need to be boarded up to be protected from the elements.

Cleanup after a fire will include removing debris, removing all of the smoke particles and soot accumulation, removing any standing water, as well as irradiating the smell of smoke. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, it's important to understand the risk to your safety and health even after the fire is out. The soot and dirty water left behind may contain things that could make you sick. This is why you will want to be extra careful when going into your home or touching fire-damaged items after a fire. In fact, before going into your home following a fire, American Red Cross recommends to check the outside of the home first. Damage on the outside can indicate a serious problem on the inside, leaving the home unsafe to enter.

As you can see, there are many dangerous risks that can come with a home fire. Without the proper cleanup, these risks can linger for longer than expected. This is why it's important to trust professionals to help restore your home back to its original quality. Don't Let a Space Heater Cause a Fire in Your Home

10/28/2021 (Permalink)

Badly burned living room of the inside of a home Damage from an in home fire

According to energy.gov there are about 25,000 residential fires a year in the United States from the use of space heaters in the home. Space heaters should be setup at least a three feet away from any thing that can catch fire such as furniture, boxes, paper or other combustible items. Check your space heater equipment often and clean it regularly. If you have any doubt replace it. New space heaters have more safety features then old ones.  It is a good idea to unplugged the space heater  whenever not in use or when you leave your home.  Cleaning your space heater can be done by blowing compressed air throughout the inside and vents to get rid of dust and debris that may accumulate and wiping down where you can.  You may need to remove the front cover to do so.

A good source for safety information regarding space heaters is ESFi  (The Electrical Safety Foundation International)

FIRE Mitigation (mitigation = the process or result of making something less severe)

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

Fire damage to a car port in Santa Barbara, CA Fire damages local businesses

Mitigation = Stopping further damage from happing after a fire is one of the first considerations once the fire has been put out in your home or business. A fire damage in your Santa Barbara business can greatly affect your ability to continue operations. To recover as much value as possible from your fire damaged property that also will have smoke damage, and soot damage, a restoration company like SERVPRO should be contacted immediately. SERVPRO can help secure the property and carefully work with the authorities as often a cause and origin investigation will need to be completed by the fire department and possible the insurance company as well. The fire cleanup team at SERVPRO can assist in evaluating the damage to the property and listing the items that are present.

SERVPRO can also perform fire damage restoration and offer an estimate onsite. The fire cleanup usually includes drying up all the water that firefighters used to put the fire out which can flood the premises. This water can cause extensive water damage causing the growth of bacteria and mold. Any residual smoke smell will be ventilated until gone. A certified technician can dry out the property and prevent mold growth using industrial equipment that sometimes includes a water extractor, a dehumidifier, and an air mover along with air filtration equipment. All surfaces are cleaned and sanitized removing all of the smoke and soot damage. The SERVPRO fire damage clean-up team will also instruct property owners how to prevent commercial fire damage in the future. If the smoke smell continues, chemical solutions like an ozone treatment or thermal fogging are also options depending on the needs of the property owner. Additional treatments may be needed weeks or even months after the initial incident.

Fire cleanup can be extremely daunting. However, fire damage restoration is normal for a fire cleanup specialist, even in the aftermath of commercial fire damage. A specialist who has the experience and the expertise to guide a property owner will ensure that fire damage is minimized as much as possible

Smoke Detectors the forgotten sentinel!

Smoke alarms. We don't think much of them unless the battery is low and they start to beep or you have a fire in your Santa Barbara home!

One Buellton home owner just recently had a small electrical fire start in the kitchen in the middle of the night. The smoke alarms worked, waking the family up so they could evacuate and quickly extinguish the fire with a small fire extinguisher. There is little doubt this fire would have been much more devastating if the smoke alarms were not functioning properly or non- existent.

Please take the time to maintain them and test them at least once a month. If they are close to 10-years-old, you should get new ones. FEMA and the American Red Cross recommend this.

Also, according to FEMA, the risk of death if you do have a home fire is cut in half for homes with smoke alarms.

Also, smoke alarms can limit fire damage as well as was the case of the Buellton home owner who was able to awaken and put the fire out before it grew. SERVPRO recommends everyone get out of the home and dial 911 during a fire.

Please checkup on those sentinels!

After a fun night out in Santa Barbara, there is nothing better than coming home and fixing yourself a nice greasy, late-night breakfast. Some bacon and eggs, and maybe some toast, will help to make the munchies go away. You crack the eggs and get the bacon frying up in the pan and decide now would be a good time to turn on the TV. While that delicious breakfast is basically cooking itself, you plop down on the couch to watch a YouTube video your friend has been nagging you to watch. The only problem is, this video is not that funny and now that your body is horizontal, and those eyelids getting heavy. Soon, the loud rumbling of your snoring fills the room. The bacon and eggs continue to cook themselves, only now they are not doing so hot. The grease has reached a flashpoint and the ingredients of the pan are on fire. A spark leaps out of the pan and finds a dish towel which transfers the fire to the wall and before you know it, the smoke alarm is screaming at you to wake up because your kitchen is burning. Adrenaline forces you out of your sleep-induced stupor and your survival instincts kick in. You grab a fire extinguisher and attack the flames. The foam suffocates the fire and just as quickly as it started, it is all over. Except now your house smells like a fire pit. Ugh! Smokey and fire extinguisher dust everywhere. I guess cooking bacon and eggs at 2 in the morning after a night out not the best idea, next time Jack in the Box it is!

Just be glad that SERVPRO of Santa Barbara is only a phone call away. Fire and smoke cleanup is one of our specialties. Our talented IICRC-Certified crew will attack the project with years of experience that guides each decision and process. Remember to check those smoke alarms

12/30/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage SERVPRO can help with clean up after a fire

Smoke alarms are often overlooked until the battery is low and they start their incessant chirping or, even worse, you have a fire in your home. Those little sentinels can be life-savers though so it needs to be your priority to make sure you have enough smoke alarms in your home and that all of them are working properly.  Smoke alarms can give you enough time to wake up and get out of your house before a fire turns deadly and they give you time to call the fire department to help limit any property damage.

Laptops and cell phones can often be the cause if they are left on something like bedding.  If they battery overheats they can start a fire. If this happens, especially if it happens in the middle of the night, smoke alarms will give that important signal to get out. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, over 3,000 people a year die in fires in the United States and this example shows how vital it is to keep your smoke detectors maintained properly.

Smoke detectors should be tested once a month and if they fail the test, replace the battery or replace the alarm.  Additionally, if your smoke alarm is over 10 years old, both FEMA and the American Red Cross recommend that you replace it with a new one.  FEMA states that your chances of dying in a fire are reduced by half if you have a home that is fully equipped fully with functioning smoke alarms.

If you do unfortunately ever suffer from a fire in your Santa Barbara home, SERVPRO of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez/Goleta is available to help you clean up and get your lives back to normal.  We are locally owned and operated. We can be reached at 805-963-0606.

Fire Damage Assessment

burned building with caution tape commercial fire loss

One of the most devastating events that can affect your home or business is a fire damage. In addition to generating thousands of dollars worth of damage, fires can destroy your valuable possessions and cause unwanted water damage. In many cases, homeowners become anxious and feel a sense of hopelessness when they witness the depth and scope of their fire-damaged property. However, hiring a fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO can limit your losses and restore your equilibrium. To help you with the restoration process, these fire damage experts perform a detailed assessment of your property. Learn more about the assessment process by reviewing the following blog.

Fire Damage Assessment Basics

In many cases, homeowners are tempted to start the cleanup process for themselves after a fire has impacted their property. Don't make this mistake. Instead, you should first contact your insurance agent to determine the extent of your coverage for the damages. The insurance company will also need to perform an inspection to your property to attain a clear estimate for repairing damages. You will also need to get in contact with a professional fire damage restoration company. Both SERVPRO and the insurance adjuster will complete the fire damage assessment. The assessment is effective in determining the extent of the damages, whether it is safe for you to reenter the property, and which equipment and materials will be necessary to complete the restoration process. Here are some of the primary components of the assessment process:

Assessing Superficial Damage

Following a fire in your home or business, a restoration expert will check your property for superficial damage. During this process, the remediation professional will start with the exterior and look for things like missing shingles, damaged chimneys, melted objects, and fire-damaged items. Additionally, the specialist will check your roof, yard, and other exterior regions of the property. Throughout the assessment, it's a good idea for you to make a video or take pictures of these items, only if it can be done safely. This visual evidence will help you in the event that you have challenges with achieving appropriate insurance restitution.

Assessing Internal Damage

After analyzing the property for superficial damage, the fire damage restoration professional will inspect the interior of your house for damage. This inspection of adjoining rooms for smoke, soot, and water damage will aid in determining an action plan for restoration.

The Cleanup Process

Once the SERVPRO specialist has completed the fire damage assessment, the cleanup process can start with water removal (if need.) This process diminishes the growth of mold on your property. The primary purpose of this cleanup process is to prevent further damage from adversely impacting your home

If your home or business has been partially destroyed because of fire, it's important that you allow a fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO to restore your house to its pre-fire condition. The Avila Fire, flames though are not the only thing that homeowners have to worry about.  Ash and smoke come right along with the fire and they try really hard to get into your home. Not to mention the bright pink fire retardant aircraft drop -  Phos-Chek used to save property.

You close your doors and you close your windows.  Smoke does not care.  As long as there is a way for air to get into your house, Smoke and his buddy ash come along for the ride.  Once they get into your house, they bring an odor that is unpleasant. What to do about ash and soot in the attic

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

attic insulation It's best to leave the cleaning of an attic to the professionals.

Sundowners are a uniquely Santa Barbara phenomenon where, because of our geography we get winds that come from the north and blow down the face of our east-west facing mountains. These winds are hot and dry and when they are blowing, they can raise the temperature considerably. A little over a couple of years ago this is what happened. The winds howled with gusts over 50 miles per hour and it was not long before they brought down a power line and sparked the conflagration to be known as The Holiday Fire. It was several days until the fire fighters were able to tame this beast but in the meanwhile the fire had burned over one hundred acres, twenty-eight structures and thirteen homes. It was not long after that SERVPRO of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez/Goleta was called into action. Wildfires consume massive amounts of fuel and turn that fuel into smoke and ash and soot. This burnt material becomes easily airborne and once it reaches your house, it looks for opportunities to come inside. Openings around doors or windows, vents in the attic, doggy doors… you name it and any possible opening presents an opportunity for soot and ash to come inside. Many homeowners are able to do much of the cleaning on their own but when it comes time to clean an attic, it is a good idea to let the professional technicians at SERVPRO of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez/Goleta handle the load. When an attic smells like smoke, it is important to remove the source of the odor and that usually means removing the insulation. Whether it is blown in or rolled, our techs will be able to remove it all. Afterwards, we will HEPA vacuum the areas and then replace the insulation with new insulation. If necessary, we will perform an ozone treatment to get rid of any lingering smells. If your attic smells like ash after a fire, please give SERVPRO of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez/Goleta a call at 1-805-963-0606.

garage fire A fire in your home can be one of the most devastating events

You Need Fire Damage Experts to Get the Job Done Right

One of the most devastating events that can affect your home in Santa Barbara or Santa Ynez is a fire.  In addition to the financial damage, fires can destroy your valuable possessions and cause unwanted water damage. This can cause a feeling of hoplessness and stress.

In many cases, homeowners are tempted to start the cleanup process by themselves after a fire has impacted their property. Don't make this mistake. Instead, you should first contact your insurance agent to determine the extent of your coverage for the damages. The insurance company will also need to perform an inspection to your property to attain a clear estimate for repairing damages. You will also need to get in contact with a professional fire damage restoration company.

After analyzing the exterior of the property for superficial damage, the fire damage restoration professional will inspect the interior of your house for damage. This inspection of adjoining rooms for smoke, soot, and water damage will aid in determining an action plan for restoration.

If your home in Santa Barbara or the Santa Ynez Valley has been partially destroyed because of fire, it's important that you allow a fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez/Goleta to restore your house to its pre-fire condition.
